Les Perreaux is the editor-in-chief of Policy Options, the commentary site of the Institute for Research on Public Policy.
Policy Options is a non-partisan, digital publication based in Montreal that brings together leading voices from academia, government, journalism, civil society and industry to analyze pressing public policy issues in Canada. It publishes timely, accessible commentary that connects research to real-world decisions, with a focus on practical solutions, diverse perspectives and topics ranging from the economy and environment to social policy, governance and foreign policy.
Les was raised in Bellegarde, 150 km northeast of Estevan, and studied political science at the University of Saskatchewan and journalism at the University of Regina.
Prior to joining Policy Options and the IRPP in 2021, Les worked as a reporter in Quebec and on the Prairies for more than 25 years. He was the Montreal bureau chief and national correspondent for the Globe and Mail and The Canadian Press. Before that, he worked as a Prairie correspondent for the National Post based in Winnipeg and as a reporter at The Saskatoon StarPhoenix.
While Les mainly covered national and provincial politics and other news in Quebec, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, he also covered the war in Afghanistan, armed conflict in the Middle East and disasters in Haiti and Kashmir. He has received national journalism awards and nominations for team coverage of mental health issues of Canadian veterans of the war in Afghanistan, the opioid crisis and the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster.
