Rural Canada & First Nations: The Backbone of Canada’s Economic Sovereignty

Canada’s economic future will not be built in its largest cities—it will be built in rural regions and in partnership with First Nations.

This session explores how rural Canada already drives a disproportionate share of GDP, exports, and resource production, and why that role is becoming even more critical. It also highlights a major shift: First Nations are increasingly acting as owners and equity partners in major projects across energy, infrastructure, and natural resources.

We will examine the role rural and Indigenous communities play in energy, food systems, and critical minerals, the barriers still holding these regions back, and what needs to change to ensure long-term economic resilience.

The message is clear: Canada’s competitiveness depends on getting this right.
